People have asked me if this piece was inspired by covid, but actually I started it in October 2019, imagining a version of Times Square that would be bearable during my commute to work. I imagined it still bright and full of life - only now it was life as overwhelming to other people as rushing crowds often feel to me. I haven’t been to Times Square since New York’s covid peak came and went. This is my latest image of it.

The Koishikawa Botanical Garden is incredible. It is tenderly landscaped, full and yet visually clean, every view a feast for the eyes. I’ve done my best to render it the way it felt the day of my visit: like a peaceful, sentimental dream.

I made this piece in a blaze of stubborn productivity during a wrist injury; it was sketched and painted almost entirely with my off hand. It’s a testament to that incredible ability to look yourself deep in the eyes, dimly lit by spite, and whisper, “Hey. You can’t tell me what to do. Only I get to do that.”
